Our (Virtual) Specialist Bookshop
Album Cover Art continues to be a fascinating field for designers and writers alike. Many pop culture commentators and perpetrators have put their thoughts to paper and we've read them all. Here in the Hypergallery Gift Shop we present only the best of the bunch for your perusal.
OVERVIEWS
Some cover the development of album cover art within in the classical music and jazz genres with Alex Steinweiss and Jim Flora at the helm of the Columbia Records art department. Richard Evans' title, The Art Of The Album Cover is our top tip in this section.
SPECIALIST
Then there are the specialist titles, covering a particular era or releases on a single record label. The Anova imprint publications, The Cover Art Of Blue Note Records and Coast To Coast Album Covers are both beautiful, well researched books to satisfy the needs of those seeking quality reference material and equally those looking for an inspirational coffee table tome.
ARTISTS' OWN
Finally, the best place to begin an understanding of an artist is surely through the artist themselves? If you have a love of a particular sleeve designer, be it Storm Thorgerson or Robert Crumb, the books they have compiled themselves are wonderful insights into their worlds as well as a record of just how much visual culture has been informed by these wizards! Check out The Raging Storm and Crumb's Complete Record Cover Collection.
Whether you want to learn more about the subject or just look at the beautiful pictures, we have only the books we'd heartily reccommend for sale here. Many of them have been signed by their authors and many are.
There are lots more on the way, and we'll blog about each new arrival as soon as it's on the 'shelf'.
